Economic and Workforce Development Division - North Carolina Community Colleges are recognized internationally for their economic and workforce development programs. North Carolina was the first state to pioneer customized training for business and industry in 1958, and continues to provide the nation's most acclaimed workforce development programs. All services are provided at exceptionally low or no cost to participating businesses.
Program Highlights:
New and Expanding Industry Training(NEIT) - A customized service designed to provide training to new employees of new or expanding industries in North Carolina. The Community College System's Economic and Workforce Development Division, in partnership with the local college and a company representative, work together to design and deliver a state-funded employee training program to meet the specifications of the new or expanding company.
Focused Industrial Training(FIT) - This program provides job-specific retraining in the manufacturing sector and provides a funding resource for community colleges to provide manufacturing-related training to companies in cases that would not be economically feasible through traditional continuing education programs.
Occupational Continuing Education - Occupational skills training courses are designed to train individuals for new employment opportunities, upgrading skills to meet new and changing job requirements, and providing training necessary to meet certification, re-certification, or continuing education requirements. Courses are offered in all occupations and vary in length according to the complexity of the skill and the needs of the employee or employer. Most occupational skills training courses are developed and taught on request by a group or an employer. Courses can be offered at a time and place convenient to the employees and employer. Available courses include the following:
-
Adult Literacy - Adult literacy programs serve adults who have difficulty reading, writing and doing arithmetic. Classes may be offered in conjunction with preparation for the adult high school diploma and GED. Contact Jan Boles at 336-633-0273 or jcboles@randolph.edu
-
Adult High School Diploma - RCC may award Adult High School Diploma or a GED (high school equivalency through examination) to workers who have never completed high school. Contact John Banks at 336-633-0241 or jhbanks@randolph.edu
-
Human Resources Development - Human Resources Development serves adults who need strengthening of other workplace skills, such as communication skills and work habits. Contact Michelle Cole at 336-633-0278 or mdcole@randolph.edu
-
English as a Second Language - English as a Second Language (ESL) serves the growing population of adults whose native language is not English. The program teaches conversational English, listening, speaking, writing and reading. Students may progress from ESL to Adult Literacy and high school level programs. Get a LIFE, Learning Is For Earning was developed from the ground up by the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce Business & Education Committee. Our goal is to present a clear message to students and parents concerning the importance and value of education. As you well know, the requirements of today’s workplace are significantly different than those the citizens of Randolph County are historically accustomed to. If our community is to continue to grow and develop, we must improve the quality of our local workforce. Get a LIFE is designed to do just that by lowering the dropout rate and connecting local students to local careers. The program demonstrates the financial relevance of a good education, and describes what kind of life students can expect with a quality education as well as without it.

Many businesses and industries have already seen the benefits of this program. Industry members praise the Summer Teacher Internship. As one member said:
"It gave us the opportunity to show educators just how important basic job skills are today. Skills such as good communication, working as a team and problem solving are very important to us".
This exciting program provides an opportunity for approximately 40 teachers to spend one week working and shadowing jobs in different businesses and industries in our community. Their experience contributes to future work-based learning activities for all students. This collaborative effort between Asheboro City Schools, Randolph County Schools, Randolph County Career Partners, Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce and the Randolph County Economic Development Corporation raises the awareness level of educators to the job skills needed to enter the workplace. Teachers represent schools in every community in Randolph County and K through 12. Randolph Community College educators also participate in this program.
